Yesterday Unionism, Today Unionism, and Tomorrow Unionism - Olabode Jeremiah
"If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree" -Michael Crichton.
For sometimes now, I have been on a political exile. But at this point in time, it is very important for me, especially for the sake of our dear union, to comment on matters arising in our union.
Though I am very young in age, I am old in history.
They told me about "YESTERDAY UNIONISM", I know about "TODAY UNIONISM", and I can predict (as a political Prophet) "TOMORROW UNIONISM". To the best of my historical and contemporary knowledge of history, I perceive that things have started falling apart in our union. In a real sense, maybe our union has been sold. Thus, things are not like they were used to be!
In YESTERDAY UNIONISM, there were people who had the love of the union in their heart. They were (if need be) ready to die for what they believed it was right. As Martin Luther King Jr rightly said, "you are not fit for living if you don't have what you can die for".
Those people were not concerned about materials or what they stood to benefit/gain. Instead, they were concerned about well being of students.
I was told, that some people in YESTERDAY UNIONISM agitated for the Ife-Ibadan express way, Lagos-Ibadan express way etc and succeeded. In about two decades ago, they said there was a guy in the faculty of Law(from Iwo, Osun-State) who sacrificed his destiny/life for the sake of our union! What have we made of his efforts? I hope he his alive to witness how we have betrayed him in TODAY'S UNIONISM!
In TODAY UNIONISM, new issues are now emerging. There are: constant erratic water supply, epileptic power supply, rape(or attempt to rape), assaults, inflation in butteries, mass failure, "tactical suspension" to mention but a view. I have always said that, if nothing is wrong with TODAY'S UNIONISM, then something must be wrong with those involved in TODAY'S UNIONISM!
In TODAY UNIONISM, they refer to some students as "Leftists" and some as "Rightists", well that is not the purpose of this write-up. According to a philosopher, "ideologies separate us, but dreams and anguish bring us together". For this reason, I believe we should concentrate on matters that affect our well being rather than discriminating. Lol and behold, we are all students!
In TOMORROW UNIONISM, things may be worse than expected(if care is not taken). I can see a TOMORROW UNIONISM whereby the Union leaders are begging for money (even from the management). I have always written it on my status that "I AM CRYING FOR THE FUTURE" but only a few understand this. According to the book of Revelation in the Bible, "he who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit is saying". I can vividly see a TOMORROW UNIONISM whereby the union leaders prefer money to the well being of students. I can see a TOMORROW UNIONISM whereby cultists take over the affairs of the Student Union Building once more. And when this happen, where is "another Africa"? I can see TOMORROW UNIONISM whereby students are withdrawing because they can not afford to pay school fees!
The only way to avoid this imminent doom on TOMORROW UNIONISM is that; whosoever that claims to be a unionist should make the love of our dear union his/her priority. I mean he/she should prefer the well being of students to material things or what he/she stands to gain or benefit. I mean he/she should not even call himself/herself a unionist let alone a union leader if he/she is not ready to sacrifice anything for the course of serving humanity.
HE WHO HAS AN EAR, LET HIM HEAR WHAT THE SPIRIT IS TELLING THE CHURCH
